A Message from the San Diego Police Department to the Stonewall Citizens' Patrol

Ben:

I wanted to thank you and your Stonewall volunteers for the fantastic job they did on Saturday night. We had not anticipated such a large turnout for the candlelight vigil, but many people were obviously compelled to participate and show support for the LGBT efforts to get out the vote. While the crowd was very large and enthusiastic, they were very respectful and well behaved. We received many thanks, for being there, from participants as they left the area.

Our biggest concern was for the welfare of everyone, and without your support we would have had a near impossible challenge. We did not have enough officers to control traffic and your volunteers graciously accepted traffic posts and the responsibility of trying to keep people out of the streets and safely on the sidewalks. After 10:00 pm, when we started receiving calls complaining about the noise, the Stonewall volunteers were very helpful in encouraging the crowds to disperse, stop honking their horns and to move their celebration into the surrounding restaurants and bars.

It was a pleasure, once again, doing business with committed community members who made it possible for such a successful event to occur with no reported complaints or incidents.

Best Wishes in your efforts!
